A message from ex-President Peter Bowden.

The Club is very sad to announce the recent death of Malcolm Broadway after a short illness. Malcolm joined the Club in 1994 at a time when his sons Matt and Simon also made appearances for Leeds and when the Club was entering the doldrums, with shortages of top players affecting results. In 1999 he took over the 1st XI captaincy at a time of need, was Club Captain for a couple of seasons and proved to be an inspiring leader. He was a brilliant fielder and useful batsman, with a top score of 101* against the President’s XI, on which occasion the writer found his bat frustratingly broad! He later served as Club Secretary for 5 years and was President from 2008-2014. He won both the Ashes and Clubman awards. Malcolm was an all-round sportsman, coming from the world of football and was a very keen golfer, being elected captain of Bearsted Golf Club.

John Fletcher adds: He was a vital member of the team who helped rescue the Club from the doldrums when we nearly lost our way. He was hugely liked and respected (not always an easy combination to achieve) by young and old alike. He led by example and inspired even the more difficult characters to bring out their best for the team. When I was 2nd XI Captain and he was Club Captain he was always easy and fair in our team selection discussions….another unusual achievement. Above all he was a fine character, good company alongside being a most competent cricketer. We will miss him enormously.”
